An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Rabski (IRE), ridden by Kevin Brogan and trained by Jonjo O’Neill, which was ridden tenderly in rear throughout to finish seventh of nine runners, beaten by 35 lengths.

The rider and the trainer’s representative were interviewed and shown recordings of the race and the Veterinary Officer reported that two post-race examinations of the gelding failed to reveal any abnormalities.

The rider stated his instructions were to sit mid-division, get Rabski (IRE) settled, make sure the gelding received plenty of daylight at his hurdles and to finish in the best possible placing.

Brogan explained that Rabski (IRE) struggled to go with the strong gallop and was off the bridle after half a circuit and was hanging right-handed which he continued to do throughout; a fact he reported at Scales although he accepted that this had little bearing on the manner in which he rode the race.

He added that he asked the gelding for an effort passing the winning post on the first circuit and for the remainder of the race but Rabski (IRE) could not respond as he was already going as fast as he could and had, in his opinion, achieved the best possible placing.

The trainer’s representative confirmed the instructions and was satisfied that the ride accorded with those instructions.

Brogan was suspended for 14 days for failing to take all reasonable and permissible measures to ensure Rabski (IRE) was given full opportunity to obtain the best possible placing, in that he failed to ask for timely, real and substantial effort during the race.

Following the race, Harry Cobden reported that Seymour Promise (IRE), unplaced, hung left-handed from half-way down the back straight.
