Fri 26th Apr
3:40pm There's the the usual eccentricity to this event with the 2009 and 2010 winners renewing rivalries. Shin A Vee won in 2009 but was narrowly beaten by COOL WARRIOR the following year and, while Derek O'Connor is a notable booking, Shin A Vee has been absent for 772 days and is now passed over. Preference is for 12 year old COOL WARRIOR, who at least has proven fitness on his side. The other 14 runners have mustered just 10 point to points wins between them and finding a form alternative to either of the two previous winners is difficult. Ten year old Norwich Flyer has three point to point wins to his name though and may play a prominent roll while Enniskillen, who worringly is still a maiden point to pointer, ran ok in the Ladies Cup on Tuesday and has minor claims. The Begrudger is a dual point to point winner a long time ago but hasn't shown anything worth mentioning recently. (TW)

He came off the bridle a fair way out just like he did at Mallow the last day. The horses have not been flying for the last six months, and I'd say there is more in him. I know he's a nine-year-old but I felt today was really the first time he was ready to run in a Grade 1. We'll give him a couple of weeks off and we may go for the Grimes Hurdle at Tipperary. The Galway Plate could be a race for him after that.

We all said this time last year that he was a small bit off but he got a bit healthier as the year moved on. Hopefully we'll see the real horse this year. It will be another two or three weeks before he hits his peak and his second run is normally his best run. He'll have a crack at the Powers Gold Cup now. After that there is a Grade 1 novice chase over two miles at Punchestown for him. We'll school him over fences now before Fairyhouse. We've had no winners since Christmas and the horses haven't been quite right but a good horse will always pull you out of a ruck.

Barry was delighted with him and he said he won easy enough. He said he switched off today. He's one of the top horses over fences. There's great opportunities and great prize money so we'll tip away. He'll go to Cheltenham on Friday week for a two and a half mile novice chase. Last year we threw him out for three months in the winter, but we won't do that this year, but he won't be running on the bad ground.

Barry said that he's some leaper. He asked him over the final four fences to ensure that he wouldn't get outpaced. He might want further, and may be more of a stayer. He thrives on his racing and was as ready as we could have him today but if he turned up again next week I'd say he could be better again. He collects every day and there is a possibility he might be slightly better going right handed. Having said that, the plan is to go to Cheltenham in October or November. There is a low grade novice chase in October, and he's more likely to go for that before the ground turns heavy. He'll have his three months off then.

It's good to ride a winner for connections that really enjoy it too. He jumped good and solid and was well-balanced on ground he wouldn't like. With the conditions of the race here it was a hard one to walk away from.

Barry was happy enough with him and he's probably only coming to himself. He'll go straight to Galway. The options are open, he'll go there for a novice or for the Plate. It's 50/50, I'd love to win the Plate.

Galway genuniely probably came too soon for him after Tipperary. He had a break after Galway and that helped him a bit. I was afraid he would get a bit edgy. Davy said he couldn't pull down his goggles today as he was travelling so well. Davy got it right tatically at Galway but there was no riding on him today. He is improving mad everyday and he is growing an awful lot, he is 16.2 hands high now and is very athletic. He will go for a graded hurdle at Tipperary now in mid-October and if he keeps doing what he is doing over hurdles he will be kept over them. We will wait until after Tipperary before making other plans. We might wait until he comes up again a proper horse before deciding whether or not to go chasing. He is electric over fences and he will have a racecourse school in about a fortnights time. He has hardly any mileage.

Island Wood, who runs for me later today, stood in the stable with him while we were saddling Rebel Fitz and it helped keep him calm. He keeps training on and improving. Davy gave him a peach of a ride but a lot of the work was done by Barry Geraghty and he'd have ridden him today but was claimed to ride The Real Article. Davy will keep the ride now in the Galway Hurdle if he wants it.

The plan is to go chasing with him in a couple of weeks,. That was beautiful ground, pure National Hunt ground, and once we get a slight ease he'll be chasing away for the summer. Adrian Maguire schooled him at Dromahane just over a week before Punchestown. He jumped the three fences in the straight three times and is a great jumper. In fact Mikey O'Connor had schooled him over fences even before he ran in a bumper.

We were very happy with him coming here today. The rain came which suited. We gave him a few bits of work over with Adrian Maguire during the week and Adrian rode him himself. He said you could ride this horse anywhere. He is a very talented horse . he is a great jumper and he'll definitely stay further. He could go next for a Grade 3 novice hurdle over three miles here next month. It's tempting as it's a good pot or another option is a two and a half mile race at Thurles. He'll go chasing next year.

He jinked, dropped his shoulder and got rid of Davy going down. Davy said that he probably wants an ease in the ground and a greater test of stamina. He did the job well enough there though and maybe we'll think about Listowel now. I wouldn't have run here only I was passing the track last Sunday (July 24th) and they were watering. I was very happy with the ground today.
