Permission was given for Strong Power (IRE) to go early to post wearing a red hood and be mounted on the chute, for Tolstoy (IRE) to go early to post wearing a red hood for and for Above (FR), Shanko (GB) and El Hadeeyah (IRE) to be mounted on the chute.
Leaving the stalls, the winner, Tolstoy (IRE), jumped sharply right-handed bumping El Hadeeyah (IRE), unplaced, off its intended line causing Crimson Sand (IRE), placed second, and Above (FR), placed fourth, to become unbalanced, but after viewing a recording of the incident, it was found that no riding offence was involved and that it had not improved the placing of Tolstoy (IRE).
An enquiry was held to consider interference shortly after the start when Above (FR), placed fourth, ridden by Marco Ghiani, interfered with Crimson Sand (IRE), placed second, ridden by Harry Davies, who in turn interfered with El Hadeeyah (IRE), unplaced, ridden by Ray Dawson.
Ghiani was suspended for 2 days for careless riding as he edged his mounted left-handed when insufficiently clear causing Crimson Sand (IRE) and El Hadeeyah (IRE) to become tight for room for a number of strides.
Following the race, Tom Marquand reported that Strong Power (IRE), placed fifth, anticipated the start.
