An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Cappoquin (IRE), ridden by Luke Morris and trained by Sir Mark Prescott Bt, which was dropped in towards the rear of the field having broken from stall 12 before being asked for an effort rounding the home bend, running on under tender handling to finish seventh, beaten 9 ½ lengths.
The rider and trainer’s representative were interviewed and shown recordings of the race.
The Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of Cappoquin (IRE), failed to reveal any abnormalities.
Morris stated that his instructions were to drop the filly in due to her wide draw and ride the race accordingly, as this was her first start, to finish in the best possible placing.
Midway down the back straight Morris reported that he pulled the filly out from behind runners away from the kickback which she was resenting and managed to tag on to the rear of the field having been initially outpaced off a strong early pace.
He stated that he began to ask the filly for an effort approximately 2 furlongs out, before riding her under a hands and heels drive on turning in, whereupon Cappoquin (IRE) stayed on past tiring horses, flattering her finishing effort.
He added that he made the decision to go left- handed to the inside half a furlong out, rather than moving to the outside as it was a 50/50 call and he felt that the rail would help the filly.
The trainer’s representative confirmed the instructions and added that he was satisfied with the ride given.
He added that the filly had been edgy at home, and it had therefore taken time to ready her for racing.
Both rider and trainer were unsure of what trip would suit her going forwards owing to her pedigree but expected her to be suited by further once she strengthens up.
Their explanations were noted.
Following the race, Daniel Muscutt reported that Tillymint (IRE), unplaced, was slowly away and had moved poorly; the Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of the filly revealed her to be lame on her right-fore, Trevor Whelan reported that Roaring Rosa (IRE) was slowly away and ran green, Cam Hardie reported that Lady Spiritus (IRE), unplaced, ran green and Daniel Tudhope reported that Justjamie (GB), placed third, hung left-handed in the home straight.
