Permission was given for Utile (GB) to be mounted in the chute; the filly also wore earplugs which were removed at the start.
An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Notation (IRE), unplaced, ridden by Ryan Moore; Blow Your Horn (IRE), placed fifth, ridden by Oisin Murphy; Raymond (IRE), unplaced, ridden by Billy Garritty; Single (IRE), placed third, ridden by Martin Harley; and Arabescato (GB), placed sixth, ridden by Marco Ghiani, which all raced detached from the leading trio in the early stages and became further adrift of the leaders through Swinley Bottom, before attempting to make ground when rounding the home bend on the final circuit.
The riders were unanimous in their view that the pace up front was too quick and unsustainable over the distance.
Moore stated Notation (IRE) is a horse that usually leads but was unable to do so on this occasion due to the fast early pace.
He added that he felt there was no benefit to pressure the filly to make the running when carrying top weight having been off the course for 70 days and further reported at Scales that Notation (IRE) was never travelling.
Murphy stated that Blow Your Horn (IRE) could not go the early pace and had no more to give in the closing stages, a fact again reported at Scales.
Garritty stated that he had attempted to make ground on the leaders down the back straight but was unable to do so as he felt being primarily a jumps horse Raymond (IRE) would not be able to sustain the pace in order to close on the leaders.
Harley stated his instruction had been to hold Single (IRE) up but when the filly had been caught behind Notation (IRE) and Raymond (IRE), he did not feel it beneficial to make up ground up the hill.
Ghiani stated Arabescato (GB) had been off the bridle going up the hill and he therefore sat off the pace and tried to challenge in the later stages but the gelding had tired badly in the home straight.
Having considered their evidence and viewed recordings of the race, the Stewards noted their explanations.
Following the race, Silvestre De Sousa reported that Star Caliber (GB), which started favourite and finished second, ran too freely.
