This was probably the race I should have went for at the start of the week and while the other race looked like it was cutting up, Sharjah (winner) was still in it. He came out of Tuesday's race well, we fired him out in the field yesterday and he was bucking and squealing so we said we'd take our chance. He is a tough horse and ran to a good level over hurdles. We reverted back to this distance, he has a good cruising speed and Philip gave him a great ride. He was near enough at the last (when Icare Desbois exited) and got there so that's the main thing. It was either run here or in Cheltenham yesterday in the race won by My Mate Mozzie but I wasn't just convinced that it might have been a fluke when we beat him at Fairyhouse. It suited to come to Galway and I'm delighted to see him win on that softer ground. He is something to look forward to and it is early in the year so I wouldn't get just excited yet but could go for a handicap at Leopardstown over Christmas. He likes fences, jumps, goes a good gallop and could eventually go for the Grand Annual at Cheltenham - I think that's the type of horse he is. The whole secret to Cahirdown Boy is to throw the reins at him, as it makes him settle: if you grab any hold of him, he will arrive at the second-last fence but his race will have been run. Once you throw the reins at him, he will settle. Sean did a marvellous job and while we weren't going to lead with (front-runner) Kilashee in the race, as long as the horse was relaxed he was going to come home well. That is why I wanted Sean to ride him. Sean Curran is a wonderful owner from Spiddle and has had three Kerry National winners for me.
