FormscanBy Donal Murphy - Gordon Elliott and Willie Mullins both saddle two, in what is a quality renewal of this Grade 2 contest. Elliott's CONFLATED is the only runner in the line-up to have won at the highest level and looks the one to beat. A brilliant servant to connections, the 10-year-old was third in the Ryanair at Cheltenham in March, before running another excellent race in defeat when second to Jonbon in the Melling at Aintree. Saint Sam and Saint Roi are the Mullins representatives and both have race fitness on their side. The hat-trick seeking former was last seen winning over flights at Auteuil and is sure to prove popular with punters. Ash Tree Meadow finished ahead of French Dynamite, Saint Roi and Solness in the Galway Plate and can confirm his superiority over those rivals now.

It wasn't really the plan to run him but when the race looked like it would cut up we decided we'd declare him and then make our mind up what to do. In fairness to Eamon and Robbie (Waters) they said 'whatever you want to do'. It worked out great. He's a good horse, Sam said he hated that ground and he'll be better on better ground. There is a race in Fairyhouse and a race in Aintree for him. He'll be entered in the Irish National and we'll see what Eamon wants to do, it's just whether he'd get that trip would be my only concern. We had four or five seconds last weekend but no winner. I'd be anxious myself, we haven't much between now and Cheltenham but it's happy days (today).

Granny would have enjoyed that and it’s a pity that she’s not here to be in the (winning) picture,. It was a great performance and great to have the owners Ed and Mary Ware here. The Red Mills Chase was one of the races we pinpointed at the start of the year. Small fields suit him – he likes to get on with things and wears the hood. He’s hot and we were a bit worried that he’d be a bit fresh on his first run and do too much on the heavy ground. Paul got a few breathers into him. Those Grade Twos or Grade Threes are where he’s most comfortable and he could go to Fairyhouse. He is a better chaser than he was a hurdler and loves jumping.

It was unfortunate that A Plus Tard couldn’t run. The race worked out well and Jack gave him a beautiful ride. Paul (Townend) steadied the pace down the pace and Jack let him stride on. He said the faster this horse goes the better he’ll be. I thought Jack was wonderful. He’s not an easy horse and he’s actually starting to settle now. He was very kinky and Jack said he wasn’t doing a stroke the whole way up the straight. He jumped perfect all the way. We don’t gallop him a whole lot and he just does his routine work each day. We left him very short in Down Royal and Jack was thrilled and said he’d come on an awful lot from it. I’d imagine he’ll come back here for the Irish Gold Cup but we’ll have to talk to Michael (O’Leary, owner) and Eddie and make a plan. It’s great for Michael and Anita as it’s their first time to come racing this season and they are big supporters of Cullentra. They have backed me from day one. There was a lot of talk last season about which race he would go for in Cheltenham but he’ll definitely be going for the Gold Cup this year.

I thought he ran very well against a horse that had already had a run in Navan. If he’d won we’d be coming here anyway so rather than running in another beginners chase, I thought let him have a crack at a good prize. He jumps well enough and he’d schooled very well in the meantime. We decided to change the tactics. JP (McManus) was wondering would he be better waited with and Mark agreed. He’s a nice prospect for the rest of the season. He’s not the biggest horse in the world but he jumps very efficiently. He’s also a lot more sensible over a fence than a hurdle. He had a hurdle rating good enough to run in championship races but was probably not a champion hurdler himself.
