Apache sweated up, pulled hard and didn't get the run of the race as he bidded to give Ballydoyle a five-timer in the concluding Tipperary Crystal Maiden at the Curragh, a race that went to Irish Review under Kevin Manning. Sun 22nd May
He likes to go from the front and I got through the first two furlongs very handy. In the last furlong he was feeling that splint that was giving him problems. That's fantastic and the horse really deserves it. He's had so many holdups. He had kissing spines last year and sore shins two years ago. He had a splint in May and he was lame after Ascot. He's a proper horse if he didn't have problems all the time. He's a massive horse, 16 2, and growing all the time. I'm delighted for the owners (Mrs Chynel Phelan/Shane Fox). He's entered in a Group 3 at Leopardstown on the 14th August.

He deserved that big-time as he's been a bit unlucky. He ran behind Trading Leather last time when he was clear at a stage. He'd dropped a bit in the weights which I was a bit surprised at as he never runs a bad race. Rory said he was wincing a bit the last day on the ground. It was probably a bit too firm for him then. He's suffered a bit with sore shins and bit and pieces in the past - he's a big horse.

I thought we were beat. He's developed all year and he's getting stronger and stronger. He's had bits of sore shins the last few years but he's really maturing now.
