Redcliff Glen left behind uninspiring form-figures and overcame odds of 40/1 when landing Limerick's Limerick Show Handicap Hurdle today, for the Byrnes family.
A 16,000gns purchase from Clive Cox's UK yard last October, the Gleneagles-gelding was well beaten in four hurdle runs this year and while thus possessing recent form-figures of '0000', today improved from the rear to challenge in the straight, eventually battling well to beat Morepowertoya by a neck.
Jockey Philip Byrnes partnered Redcliff Glen for his brother owner Cathal Byrnes while the pair's father trainer Charles Byrnes later reported “he has been disappointing every day he ran although his last couple of pieces of work had been better.
“We were hoping for the best and he (son Philip) said he'd go wide for the better ground.”
He added “he had solid enough Flat form and we thought he'd have done something before now but never showed me much. He is ground-dependent and is more a horse for next summer.”
