Trainer Joseph O'Brien got off the mark with a final-race winner on Champions Weekend as his Max Mayhem landed the Curragh's concluding Irish Stallion Farms EBF 'Northfields' Handicap, for owner Hayley O'Connor and jockey Mikey Sheehy.
O'Brien's Melbourne Cup winner Twilight Payment and Baron Samedi filled the '2-3' respectively in today's Irish St Leger while the trainer also sent Agartha to finish second in today's Moyglare Stakes.
Max Mayhem fared best in the concluding 23-runner race, beating Pineapple Express by a neck, in a race won last year by today's St Leger hero Sonnyboyliston
Following the race Sheehy stated “he was very good and tough today. He put his head down and toughed it out to the line.
“I broke well from 15. There was plenty of pace on and I was struck on the wing the whole way around. I didn’t really want to be there but he travelled into the race with ease. He didn’t really quicken much he just lengthens and he was good and game today.”
