18-year-old Jamie Powell, son of the late Anthony Powell, rode his first winner as 13/8 joint favourite Threebagsfull took the Irish EBF Auction Series Maiden.

The Requinto colt, trained by Johnny Murtagh, had been third and second on his previous two starts and duly went one better, leading a furlong out before holding on by half a length from the other 13/8 jt fav Might And Mercy who finished well.

The winner was steadily supported in the betting all day having been 5/1 overnight.

A delighted Powell commented: “It’s a great feeling to ride my first winner — I could get used to that!

“I was drawn high and wanted to jump forward as they weren’t really coming from the back today. I was able to slot in and on a track like that the rail is the place to be.

“I got the gap and he was very game and quickened up.”

“I’m from Kildare town and went to RACE. I got sent to John Oxx but he retired and I ended up in Murtaghs and I haven’t looked back since really.

“Johnny would watch back every race with you and tell you what you have done right and wrong. You couldn’t have a better man on your side.”
