The Ring Is King and Gary Halpin get up to beat Alcock And Brown© Photo Healy Racing
He missed the break but Gary Halpin was cool in the saddle, and that proved the correct approach as The Ring Is King (7/1) eventually came out best in the 188BET Horse Racing Charter Apprentice Handicap at Dundalk.
Halpin brought the course winning Jeremy gelding, on his first run since September, with an effort from the back towards the outer in the straight.
Paul Flynn 's charge was travelling sweetly at that stage, but he had to work to get the better of the favourite, Alcock And Brown by a neck 'at the death.'
"He's a grand old horse and when he gets to a mark of 65 he normally does well enough," said Flynn.
"I wanted to go to Limerick but he was balloted out. I would have preferred to go there but I have to be happy now as it's worked out in his favour.
"Gary gave him a great ride. The boys had a few quid on so everyone is happy."
