Henry De Bromhead registered a sixth Christmas success today as his Sommesky (5/6f) completed a cross-card double for the trainer in winning Limerick’s Red Mills Irish EBF Auction Maiden Hurdle.

Out of a French-bred mare and by Soldier Of Fortune, Sommesky had battled mud in winning a course bumper in March and today quickened well in kinder conditions to score comfortably by 6.5 lengths from Custom Taylor

De Bromhead had trained four Irish winners across three meetings on St Stephen’s Day and, earlier today, landed a Grade 3 hurdle at Leopardstown with July Flower

At Limerick O’Connor, with his second festive winner, reported “Sommesky’s run in Fairyhouse was encouraging and we thought if he built on that, he would be there or thereabouts. He lengthened away up the straight and seems a nice horse.

“He seems fairly versatile ground-wise and, from a jockey’s perspective, that distance sees far enough but maybe he might get to three miles.”
