An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Espresso Freddo (IRE), ridden by Dougie Costello and trained by Robert Stephens, which was held up in rear and appeared to be tenderly ridden early on in the home straight, passing several horses in the home straight to finish fifth of eleven, beaten by 4½ lengths.

The rider was interviewed and shown recordings of the race.

The Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of Espresso Freddo (IRE) failed to reveal any abnormalities.

The rider stated that his instructions were not to rush the gelding and to get it into a rhythm.

He continued that he jumped well and that he was happy to get cover in the early stages and intended to take his time.

He added that he has ridden the gelding before and when he felt the pace slow down in the back straight, he was aware that this would not be suited to Espresso Freddo (IRE).

He explained that the gelding needs to be held together as Espresso Freddo (IRE) tires quickly and is best suited by a strong pace and only being asked for one strong run.

He continued that in the final half furlong he was passing tired horses making his finishing efforts look exaggerated.

His explanation was noted.

Inside the final furlong, the winner, Uzincso (GB), shifted marginally right before being quickly corrected by its rider, carrying Kendergarten Kop (IRE), placed third, off its intended line, but after viewing a recording of the incident it was found that no riding offence was involved and that it had not improved the placing of Uzincso (GB).

Following the race, Jack Garritty reported that Irreverent (GB), placed second, was denied a clear run and Ben Curtis reported that Red Jasper (GB), unplaced, ran too free.

The Veterinary Officer reported that Herculean (GB), unplaced, had bled from the nose.
