The Stewards received a report from Mr. W. Fleming , Turf Club Clerk of the Scales, regarding the fact that M.P. Flanagan , rider of Stoughan Cross , weighed in at 1.7 lbs overweight. Evidence was heard from the rider concerned, who stated that he had had a small drink and an orange after weighing-out which may have accounted for the extra weight on weighing-in. Having considered the evidence, the Stewards were satisfied that M. P. Flanagan was in breach of Rule 231 and they therefore suspended him for one race day. The Stewards enquired into the running and riding of Smoking Big Cigars (GB), ridden by R.P. McNamara, and trained by Ms. Sandra Hughes. Evidence was heard from the rider and trainer concerned. R.P. McNamara, stated that he had ridden this horse in exercise at home and the trainer left the instructions largely up to himself. He felt the pace was too fast early given the going and he didn't go after them. On the turn leaving the backstraight he was forced to check wide and shuffled back. He squeezed his mount all the way home from there and there was little response. He felt the horse wants better ground and possibly a further trip in time. He felt he obtained his best possible placing. Ms. Sandra Hughes, stated that she didn't tie the rider down to specific instructions as he knew the horse. She stated that she was worried about the ground today and felt that the horse merely passed tired horses in the straight. She expressed herself satisfied with the ride and expected she would probably put the horse away for the season now. The Stewards also received a report from the Turf Club Veterinary Officer who stated that the horse returned with a badly grazed left hind cannon bone and that the horse also coughed a few times post race. Having viewed the recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards noted the explanations offered.
