Permission was given for Isabella Ruby (GB) to go early to post.

An enquiry was held to consider the placings in this race after interference inside the final furlong involving Johnny Reb (GB), placed third, ridden by Daniel Muscutt, Madrinho (IRE), placed fifth, ridden by Ben Curtis, and Big Lachie (GB), placed second, ridden by Hollie Doyle.

The Stewards found that the interference had improved the placing of Johnny Reb (GB) as the gelding had drifted right-handed across Madrinho (IRE), causing Curtis to have to take a significant check and lose momentum for several strides, with the distance at the line a neck and a nose.

Doyle was interviewed and although receiving a very slight bump the interference did not affect her placing.

The Stewards therefore revised the placings as follows: Third, CALIN’S LAD, fourth, Madrinho (IRE), fifth, JOHHNY REB.

The interference was found to be accidental as Johnny Reb (GB) hung persistently right-handed despite Muscutt’s best efforts to correct the gelding.

An enquiry was held into the running and riding of CALIN’S LAD, ridden by Andrew Mullen and trained by Ben Haslam, which was quietly ridden at the rear of the field before meeting trouble in running inside the final furlong, to then run on and cross the line to finish fourth, beaten by 2 ¾ lengths.

The rider and the representative of Ben Haslam were interviewed and shown recordings of the race, and the Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination, during routine testing, revealed the gelding was lame on its left-fore leg.

The rider stated he had been given no specific instructions and was asked to ride the race as he found it.

He added that CALIN’S LAD jumped and settled well off a strong early gallop, but when the pace quickened again towards the end of the back straight, the gelding came off the bridle.

He stated his intention had been to come with one strong run a furlong out but as he entered the home straight CALIN’S LAD was hanging right-handed so he allowed him to continue his run to the right but in doing that met trouble in running when there was interference between horses in front of him causing him to have to switch left; a fact he reported at scales.

He further added that as the gelding was finishing strongly he would recommend stepping him up in trip in the future.

The Trainer’s representative stated that he was satisfied with the ride given, although disappointed that Mullen had been unlucky in running and, in his opinion, could have won with a clear run to the line.
