Mother's Day isn't a renowned betting day but was offered as a reason, by restricted trainer John Beamish, for the minor touch landed by his Magical Mother (25/1 into 14s), winner of the Martinstown Opportunity Handicap Chase at Downpatrick today.
Ridden by Kevin Sexton, Magical Mother led at the final fence before staying on well for a four and a quarter lengths win over Ardmillan
Carrigtwohill, Co Cork based Beamish, in his third season with a license and having his 21st runner, later revealed "it wasn't my money- maybe it's because it is coming up to Mother's Day!
"That'll make the journey home shorter! I came up last night and stayed with a schoolfriend in Navan!"
He added "I've tried everything with her (Magical Mother) - hunting and schooling. She has shown some of her old spark since her last run and I'll keep her going now."
