Joyces back on winning trail in Ireland
The Classic winning Joyce silks, memorably successful on Saoire in the Irish 1,000 Guineas in 2005, had their first successful airing in Ireland in quite a while when Marguerite's colours were carried to victory by Wayne Lordan on Captain Obvious in the opening Irish Stallion Farms European Breeders Fund (C & G) Maiden at Naas.
Always on the pace in this six furlong event which appeared to take plenty of getting, Captain Obvious, a juvenile son of Choisir (a 15,000 Euro Goffs graduate from last September) led from a furlong out and he kept at it well to beat the easy-to-back staying on favourite, Qatar's Pearl by a length and a quarter.
David Wachman trains Captain Obvious, home-bred by the Joyces and he reported by phone: "He is a nice colt. We've always liked him and he has always gone nicely at home.
"He was green towards the finish and he should improve quite a bit. He'll be able to step-up in grade now and he'll have no problem going a bit further."
