Kush makes all at 80/1 under Mark Gallagher
To say she hasn't been easy is an understatement and we went to Dundalk twice last winter and she didn't load. She actually has no problem with the stalls and would stand in them all day long, but she won't go in. We got Johnny Wixted, the stalls handler, and a few of the lads over on the Curragh and they were brilliant and they lifted her in on her last three runs. Only for them she wouldn't be racing. She always worked well, that's why we kept persevering, and has an engine and can gallop. She came to us unraced from Charlie Appleby's at the sales last year (for 75,000 GB pounds), is by Shamardal and is out of a Tracey Collins-trained mare who won two Group 3s. To win a maiden with her is great and her American owners have been very patient. You'd say it's not worth it but to get this far is brilliant and I'm delighted for myself!
Solene Lilyette wins Gowran feature for the Slatterys
This is a brilliant result and her breeding is coming through - it took a bit of time to come to herself but she is very smart. She is in the Snow Fairy Stakes in two weeks time and in the Blandford on Champions Weekend. We'll talk to the owners and see what they want to do. She won twice for us and (winning owners) Team Valor liked what they saw and rang up enquiring about her, bought her and very kindly left her with us. She was unlucky the last day in the Curragh (second to Longbourn) and we think a lot of her. It is great to get a Listed win with her and she is a valuable commodity now. We think she will improve as she goes up in trip. Mr Barber and Team Valor will make the decision regarding next year and there are loads of those good fillies’ races. You could end up anywhere with her.
O'Callaghan's juvenile goes in on debut at 33/1
He is a lovely horse, is nice and big but raw and is a sleeper at home, . He only does enough so we weren't expecting a whole lot today but he had shown enough to suggest that he might win a maiden. It is a nice surprise today for one of ours to go and win first-time out. Leigh gave him a peach from stall 19 to get him up. He was still plenty green and Leigh got him balanced and he was good and game to the line. You'd imagine he'll get a mile. He is by El Kabeir (by Scat Daddy), a first season Yeomanstown Stud sire, and is the first one I've had.
288/1 brace for Roche as Nebo makes all
16/1 winner for champion jockey on Cluskey's filly
We had a good man on board - I'm not saying Robert (Whearty, previous jockey) wasn't alright on her but she is a little bit iffy and wise, and can be a little stubborn. She ran very well on her first run back at Cork (third) this year and we were a little disappointed after. We had a job trying to tack her up today and I said if she doesn't do it today, she'll never do it. She went through the sales ring unsold and we offered the minimum bid (E1,000) and it was accepted and we took our time with her. She should go in again and he (Keane) said she could go back to a mile or could also go up in trip a little further.
Third career win for Harrington's Shona Mea
She has to get down into that grade, won here over a mile last year and over 1m1f today. She is in at the Curragh on Friday (in a 1m apprentice handicap, along with first race winner Howling Wolf) and will most likely go there as she'll probably get a hike for that. The (first-time) visor made a big difference today.
Keane doubles up on progressive Phoenix Cowboy
It is great to win the McEnery Cup - John and Paul are great friends of ours, we've been lucky buying plenty of horses from them and their cousin Marie Lou (McEnery) is our secretary at home. Colin was delighted with him, we thought he wanted plenty cut in the ground but he loved that today, being on the easy side of good. He moved brilliantly, won well and that is going to open up a lot more doors. He'll get further, that was a 0-100 and a Premier Handicap could be his next target. He has allowed himself to get into a handicap on Champions Weekend so we'll have some fun.
