'Kensington Keane' delivers in Dublin
I thought she was beaten and I said to Derville (his wife) 'we're beat a head'. I was surprised they called a photo, but when we got out of the lift someone said 'well done' to me!. it was her last try - we took the blinkers, the tongue-tie, cross noseband and earplugs off her and I said 'go on on your own and we'll see what happens'. We had brought her to Limerick last week but I took her out because the ground went too soft, I said because it was her last run we'd make sure she had the ground she likes. Hopefully we'll be able to go and run her again, she can't go up too much for that. She's starting off a low base so she can try again. It's great, the lads (No Rush Man Syndicate) are from Clogherhead and they are with me a long time. Gary Aspell, who runs the syndicate, was saying he was coming under pressure!
'Yard favourite' Overheer registers fourth success
Overheer is the most honest genuine horse but the handicapper has got to him. He's a genuine horse at his level but the handicapper will probably get him again now. We love him and that's why we have him. We tried to sell him last year but we didn't get the price so Joseph Murphy (his son) still owns him and he's a yard horse.
Hayes warms up for Tahiyra with Leopardstown winner
Everylittlestep takes one giant leap
she was long overdue a win, was good today and stuck her head down and battled. There had been questions on one or two days about her battling, but in fairness to her she had a little problem last year and we only found out after the season was over. Her first run back this season was very good and on her last two runs there were excuses afterwards but today she was bang on. Hopefully she'll get a bit of confidence from that, she's not ungenuine but just parks herself when she gets to the front and doesn't do a whole lot. She needs to come late, even later maybe.
'Cooking' Waltham wins well on debut
he's a horse that we've loved at home and he's been doing everything right. He's just proved what we've seen at home but 'trip' horses need to come to the races to show that little bit extra, and he's done it. We knew he'd been green, he's never been away from home and everything he did today is exactly what we thought would happen - he fell out of the stalls. Colin loved him and I'd say he's pretty nice. He's 70/80 percent cooked - that's a cliché that people say but we genuinely mean that. He's only cooking. We'll take baby steps, we just wanted to see what we were seeing at home and he ticked that box. Granted the way our horses are running, he will stand out but at the same time we would have been very disappointed today if he didn't do that.
Options open for Connell's easy winner
he had three goes to win a bumper aged six and couldn't as he was very keen, but he's a real pro now. He missed the kick today, settled away lovely, travelled everywhere and it was like a piece of work. Finny said he was never concerned at any stage, that he was always going to bolt up. I was a little concerned about the ground, I live locally and we got 30mm during the week in half an hour which was grand, as it took the firm out of the ground. The plan was to come here and run a nice race. He's about 10lb lower over hurdles and while we were looking at a handicap hurdle in Galway, on the back of that we may have to look at the amateur handicap. He's going to get a high mark as the right horses were second and third - he could be a 90-rated flat horse. I actually thought about the Galway Plate earlier in the year but it's too far. He's a two-miler over fences and there's nothing for him until the autumn. The Cesarewitch is also there at the end of the year and it's a €100,000 race.
