Paul Smith upstages his father Derek in Leopardstown opener
We always thought he was a very nice horse and he ran very well the first day,. Niall always said he'd like better ground and he'll probably go seven furlongs. He's a nice big horse who should mature well and we think he's up to stepping up. He's a very straight-forward horse, does everything pleasingly and is a nice ride in the morning. Hopefully he's on an upward curve. I haven't really looked beyond today. Today was the day really. I didn't enter him in anything big yet but there are plenty of races there. He's won his maiden now so I might just give him a little bit of time and see if he can develop into a nice horse for the end of July/August.
Scriobh Nua is a filly on the up
Again in front she's having a look around and she's still learning the trade. She has plenty of quality about her, and plenty of size, and I just said to Jim that no matter what she's doing at the moment that she's a filly that's going to keep stepping up, stepping up, all the time. The more racing she gets the better she's going to get. It's drying all the time out there and it's quick but safe ground. She has everything and you'd travel a long way to get a better looking one. We were learning on the job (in the Guineas) — nothing wrong with that. We'll go into Listed now and hopefully end up in Group races. She'll stay a bit as well — she has prospects.
2 for Murtagh at Leopardstown including the big one
I'm so delighted he's won a Group 3 because we've always thought he was a group horse and he thrived over the winter,. The big day is back here on Champions Weekend. Sheikh Fahad is a big supporter of the day so he'll come back here for the Boomerang in the long-term. We'll keep him going because he thrives on racing. He's done nothing but improve since he came back from England. It was similar last year when he ran at Ascot and came back and won at the Curragh. We'll keep him going in those Group 3s and Group 2s but the big day is Quipco Irish Champions Weekend for him. We put the blinkers on him because the last day he ran a little bit lazily although maybe Epsom didn't suit him. He likes Leopardstown. That's the first ride Chris has had for me. Five years he's been annoying me for rides and then I give him my best horse!
Bucky goes back to back at Leopardstown
That was grand. He's a kind timid horse. We didn't take him back on his second start in Dundalk and it just didn't work so we learned to take our time and arrive wide and late,. He's still a baby but we think he'll get ten furlongs in time. He's a lovely individual of a horse, he's growing up and I'd say there's another day or two in him.
McGuinness gets a win out of Aussie Valentine
It's been a long-time coming. I've had a rough five or six weeks,. The horse deserved it. On ratings he looked to be the pick and he's been very consistent all year. We just decided to take the 10lb off him tonight to give him a chance. We had it drilled into Tom what to do and he rode a perfect race. I'm delighted for him and for Gary Devlin and Joe McCrory that own him. He was a cheap horse, we bought him at Newmarket in the horses in training. He'll probably venture over hurdles at some stage during the summer and we could also look for something similar again. We didn't think he'd go on the ground but nothing ventured nothing gained. He went well and stayed at it well. We said we didn't make enough use of him the last day in the Curragh.
Trainer Murtagh has first treble at odds of 172/1
I had great days here as a jockey but that has to be one of the great days of my training career. It's the first time I've had a treble,.
All Mullins finale as Tom beats Willie
He's a right horse. He's 133 over hurdles and the main objective is the Galway Hurdle,. 134 would get him in for sure, I think, but 133 he'd be in at the bottom. Whether I run him over hurdles between now and then, I don't know. We might run in another Flat handicap. He stuck at it well. He pulled up the day he won his maiden hurdle at Ballinrobe and I said to Finny going out 'don't hit the front too soon'. That plan went out the window!
