Well-backed Teresa Mendoza surges home under Lee
Night Of Romance relishing seven furlongs
Wexford Native scales The Acropolis
He’s been a work in progress and didn’t run until he was three so we are trying to make up for lost time. We’ll be stepping him up now to probably ten furlongs and hopefully he’ll progress. I bought the dam in America many moons ago. She’s bred a few winners but nothing of his class and hopefully we will be able to build a pedigree from here.
Shartash motors home to land Railway Stakes
He showed a nice turn of foot when the gap opened. It half opened and I went and it closed again, I had to sit for a stride but to be fair to this lad, he picked up really well when it did open. He's hardy and we always liked him. It is nice to get that big win in these colours (Aga Khan) as well. I think so (more to come), he loved that ground out there and I think he is only going to get better with racing. For an Invincible Spirit, his mind is unbelievable. He is one to look forward to. These colours have been very lucky to me throughout my career. We’ve had some great days. For His Highness to send us horses was special and to win the Railway Stakes is a great day for the team. He’s a nice horse that is improving all the time and he had to be brave today. Ben says he has a good turn of foot and the good ones have a turn of foot. Ben said he wasn’t in a great position but when he got into the gap he quickened up well. After he won in Naas we thought this race would really suit him well. We freshened him up and it’s great when it all comes together. He’s in the Phoenix Stakes.
Keane wins his first Irish Derby on Westover
. I was (a bit keen for a furlong) but once he got in behind one he gave me a beautiful ride. He's a monster of a horse, so he is only going to be a better horse next year. I'm very grateful and thankful to the owners, the Juddmonte family, they have been very good and loyal to us since they joined Glenburnie (Ger Lyons' stable). I'm very thankful that they put their faith in me to ride this horse today.
Aikhal wins at 20-1 for O'Brien and Moore
He stepped up to a mile and a quarter today and he got the trip very well. You'd be delighted with what he has done there, he has beaten some real solid older horses. Hopefully he has got a bright future from here. He won well and they weren't getting anywhere near him. We thought this was a very good horse last year but he got a hold up in the spring and he went to the St James’s Palace without a run which is certainly not ideal. It was a slow pace and then they quickened and left him. Ryan said maybe we ran the wrong horse in the Derby when he got off him. Ryan said they went a strong gallop and he couldn’t believe how well he was going and he ran right through the line.
Fastnet Crown lands a good pot
I’m delighted for Michael (Smith, owner) who also bred him and he bred I Am Superman who also did well for us. This horse ran very well in Royal Ascot last week (10th in the Buckingham Palace Stakes)and, to be fair to Michael, he said go on and take your chance in the Curragh. He’s been knocking on the door to win one of these big handicaps and he’s gone and won well today. There was a good strong gallop and that’s what suits him. He might win another one if the handicapper is not too hard on him.
Lee at double on Bay Of Bengal
When Billy is riding at the top of his game like that, he’s worth his weight in gold. He said he would play late as he thought he hit the front too soon at Gowran the last day. He gave her a beautiful ride and it’s great to have a winner on Derby day. I was happy when a few of them came out and there were only 11 runners which suited her with not much experience. She’s as hard as nails and is a fighter. She has the heart of a lion. We’ll talk to John O’Connor and Paul Starr and see what the handicapper does. There are some nice fillies' handicaps for the rest of the year.
