Spirit makes it two on the bounce
She is quite a nice filly and she is straight forward. She is running over a trip that is a bit short for her but she is improving all the time. She definitely wants better ground and her class got her through. There is plenty of stakes races and she'll have to try her hand in them now.
Three in-a-row for in-form Gorman
He stayed at it well. He was given a fair blow as he was out for a while and is just back in five weeks. That will leave him right for his next run which will probably be over hurdles. He is a good jumper of hurdles and he is very genuine and gives everything even with no whips today (as it was an apprentice race). Really heavy ground doesn't suit him as he is flat bred. I told Megan to sit in on him and take it up in the straight but they found it hard to get by the leader. He will probably go to Listowel now for a conditions hurdle or a handicap hurdle unless he pops out of this very well he could go for another flat race. I hope the handicapper isn't too hard on him.
Major success for Carmody with Ursa
Queen swoops late to deny Oliver newcomer
We always thought she was very nice and she has lots of ability. That is the way to ride her, to come late as she shuts down when she gets there. Joseph felt that he got there a bit early at Leopardstown (last time out). The plan was to come here today and find out what was going on as she always worked very smart. She will be way better on better ground and will come back here in two weeks time for the Moyglare.
Captains takes top honours in Curragh Stakes
He deserved that and he has always shown us he is a stakes horse. Wayne said he didn't have to hit him a smack. They went a good gallop and he won snug. He is entered in all the good races, the Mill Reef and the Middle Park. He will get seven furlongs and is pretty adaptable. He is a grand tough, honest, sound horse and he has plenty of ability.
Punch wins Cambridgeshire on handicap debut
I'm absolutely delighted. He is a horse that was very green on his debut at Cork and Gary Carroll gave him a lovely educational ride there and he kept on so well. I knew the step up in trip to a mile would be no problem and I thought he would sneak in at the bottom of the handicap and that we might as well give it a go. We knew he would handle the ground. Chris gave him a great ride. I told him to ride him as he finds him and if he got bumped or crowded to look after him. We were worried about his inexperience in a big field. Three furlongs out I thought he was in trouble as he had to bring him back and when he was riding him two and a half furlongs out I thought he was gone. But when he saw daylight he jumped back on the bridle and came home very well.
Bird's Eye takes the last for Stack & Berry
She did it well. She is not really there yet and this year has been a bit of a right off with her with one thing after another. She has had infections and hematomas. This month is the only clear run we got with her. We always thought a bit of her and pure ability got her through today. She was getting a bit tired there at the end. Dropping back to five furlongs would be no problem to her and hopefully next year will be her year.
