I’ve had a load of horses running well in the last few weeks so it’s grand that one has put their head in front. He spread a shoe coming here and it’s all thanks to the farrier at the track, John McAteer, as a few hours ago I didn’t think he would be running. He’ll tip away here for the winter and has won five now. He’s a good little servant. I’d say he’s better over seven and I wanted to run him in the second race here but he got balloted out. This race suited him as they went hard. Jake has made a great start and is doing really well.

He ran here last week but he got no cover on the outside and was very keen. He can just be pure ignorant. We put the red hood on him today and dropped him down in trip. He was tough in the finish and his ignorance probably helped him there. We claimed him from the same race we also got Sister Lola (on September 2nd).

There is not many horses win three nurseries. His first few runs in maidens weren’t too inspiring so we left him off for the summer and he’s just kept improving. His weight is going up so obviously he’s maturing. I thought we were in trouble a furlong out as he lacked the pace to lie up with them but he showed a great attitude to get up. We keep the blinkers on him as early on he just wouldn’t concentrate on the job but he’s doing it now. The lads are knocking great fun out of him for a cheap horse. We’ll see how he is and he could go for the Birdcatcher. He’s a tough hardy horse and, from what we saw today, six (furlongs) will be no trouble to him.

That was just brilliant by Ronan. I said to him ‘just keep it simple, you know the horse now’ and he had no trouble in running — everything went smoothly. It’s particularly poignant as Pat was a great friend to all of us.
