An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Bearaway (IRE), ridden by Dale Swift and trained by Seb Spencer, which raced in rear throughout before staying on from an unpromising position approaching 2½ furlongs out under hands and heels riding to finish eighth, beaten 8¾ lengths.

The rider was interviewed and shown recordings of the race and the Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination revealed the gelding was found to be 2/5 lame on its right-fore at the trot.

The rider stated his instructions were to hopefully settle mid division, with a decent pace to aim at.

Swift indicated that Bearaway (IRE) had jumped well and after checking to his inner to ensure there was room for him to move closer to the rail, allowed Greystoke (GB) to cross in front of him.

However, with the leaders going no gallop and the pace constantly steadying up, Bearaway (IRE) had settled much further out of his ground than intended and he switched down to the rail in order to secure the most economical trip.

Thereafter, he considered the pace to have been muddling and uneven with the race developing into a sprint from leaving the back straight.

Swift continued by saying that Bearaway (IRE) had ended up very poorly positioned in the context of how this race was run and trying to mount a challenge on the gelding, who appears to lack tactical speed was difficult when the pace increased sharply as the majority of the field had got first run on him.

He also stated that in the home straight when trying to thread his way between runners, that Bearaway (IRE) had been short of galloping room when not getting the clearest passage (a fact he reported at scales).

Swift explained his feedback to the trainer would be that they need to consider adopting more positive tactics on Bearaway (IRE), so that he can avoid being disadvantaged again should the race not be truly run.

His explanations were noted.

Rounding the first bend, a free-running Eagle Court (IRE), unplaced, hung right-handed across the heels of Johnny Boom (IRE), placed fifth, and had to be checked by its rider, but after viewing a recording of the incident, it was found that no riding offence was involved.

Approaching two furlongs out, Down To The Kid (IRE), placed third, shifted sharply left-handed when racing tight to the inside of Johnny Boom (IRE), placed fifth, which resulted in Painless Potter (IRE), unplaced, being checked in its run but after viewing a recording of the incident, it was found that no riding offence was involved and that it had not improved the placing of Down To The Kid (IRE).

Following the race, Rossa Ryan reported that Greystoke (GB), placed second, hung badly left-handed throughout; Dale Swift reported that Bearaway (IRE), unplaced, was denied a clear run in the straight; David Probert reported that Johnny Boom (IRE), placed fifth, ran too free and Ben Robinson reported that Cianciana (GB), unplaced, hung left-handed throughout.
