Review wexford 24th Jul
Pat Smullen was the man to follow in the Flat races on Wexford's mixed card as he landed a quick double in the opening two races.
The champion jockey started by getting Trikirk (11-2) home in front in a driving finish to the Blackstairs Claiming Race.
The Michael Grassick-trained eight-year-old was always close to the pace set by Roseska and tackled the leader a furlong and a half out before withstanding a series of late challenges to score by half a length.
The double came courtesy of Reflected Image who hit the front two furlongs out on the way to winning the Clonard Maiden for the Dermot Weld team.
Favourite Sandymount Lady threw down a serious challenge throughout the final furlong and the pair had it between them, but the 4-1 winner held her at bay by a short head.
There was another desperately close finish in the Belmont Handicap and it went the way of the Billy Lee-ridden 5-1 shot Akinspirit
Michael Butler's five-year-old, winner of his last two races, looked full of running when he took it up turning into the straight, but he was hard pressed through the final furlong by Baltimore Patriot
Akinspirit always looked to have the upper hand, but he faltered in the dying strides and the post came just in time for a short-head success as Lee celebrated his 23rd birthday.< Eyeffess (7-4 favourite) finally got off the mark at the 22nd time of asking when the focus switched to the jumpers in the www.wexfordraces.ie Maiden Hurdle.
Ruby Walsh rode a patient race on Philip Rothwell's eight-year-old, coming to tackle Beliar between the final two flights and forging ahead on the run-in to win by three-quarters of a length.
The trainer quickly added a second victory when 14-1 chance Mount Welcome produced a flying finish to grab the Coolcotts Handicap Hurdle.
The five-year-old had plenty to do jumping the second-last, but ran on strongly for 7lb claimer Declan Bates and collared leaders Takestan and Imperial Belle who were having a private battle on the inside, to win by a length. It was Bates' first winner
