China One was bred by Miss Kirsten Rausing and the Niarchos Family and he passed through the sales ring three times, for modest sums on each occasion, most recently for 11,500 Euros at Goresbridge in May 2011. Odds compilers saw fit to put a 10/1 beside the now three-year-old's name this morning for the Navan Lock & Key Maiden – he went off at 9/4 and he got the job done by two and a quarter lengths under Chris Hayes at Dundalk.
China One made his ground two furlongs out and he eventually got to the front over a furlong out on the way to accounting for the promising newcomer Ursa Major
Paul Deegan trains China One and he also had Filatore in the line-up. That one finished last under Pat Smullen.
Deegan said of the Guo Jin-owned winner: "He was bought at Goresbridge for 12,000 and he did one bit of work last year and he showed enough.
"He's a big shell of a horse and we've always thought he could be a smart horse. He stays and he's got pace.
"Hopefully he's a horse with a nice future. He's owned by a Chinese businessman - his son James is on the course at the National Stud." (AM & EM)
