Ruby Walsh went north-west for two rides at Sligo this afternoon and travelled home with two winners after Long Dog added to the earlier success of hot-pot Bachasson when also justifying short-priced favouritism in the GAA Race Day 18th August Maiden Hurdle.
The 2/7 favourite, successful here on the flat for Andy Oliver but absent since finishing second on his hurdling debut at Fairyhouse nearly eight months ago, scored in runaway fashion.
Willie Mullins' charge was left in front when After Rain ran wide off the bend going away from the stands just beyond halfway, and took complete control in the straight to record a 12 lengths verdict. The Welsh Wizard was second, with Miss North Light a further two and a half lengths back in third.
Walsh said, "His jumping was a bit rusty early but he was professional on the second circuit. He could have followed the other horse when he ran wide but he switched inside."
The multiple champion jockey added with a wry smile, "He could be alright!"
STEWARDS REPORTS
J.R. Barry, trainer of After Rain (FR), reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his charge ran very free , was green in front, ran off bend past the stands and tired in closing stages
The Turf Club Veterinary Officer examined After Rain (FR), trained by J.R. Barry, at the request of the Stewards and reported the animal to be Post Race Normal.
