Waaheb shows his class in Leopardstown finale
Those that took the short odds about Waaheb for the concluding Killiney (Pro/Am) Flat Race got a bit of a fright when he started to battle it out with Jenari from the quarter mile pole but he ultimately prevailed a shade cosily under Robbie McNamara at Leopardstown.
Waaheb had to make his own running when nothing else wanted to go on and into the straight it was the Kate Harrington-ridden newcomer Jenari who emerged as the chief danger. However that Milan gelding couldn't quite match Waaheb in the final furlong, going down by a length and a half in the end.
Dermot Weld trains the victorious Elusive Quality four-year-old for his son Kris and the Curragh handler said: "That was a very good performance giving 14Ibs to the runner-up who looks like a very nice horse.
"The plan was to hold him up and ride him for pace but Robbie wisely did the right thing by going on. They pulled a long way clear of the third too (nine lengths back to Streets Of Newyork .
"He may go for the McManus bumper at Limerick next and then he might go to Punchestown. He is a big weak horse but he's all class.
"He is a super leaper, he jumps like a stag and he could have a huge future over jumps."
