With Sacre Malta - the 9/10 favourite in the 15-runner two mile handicap hurdle - running no race and dropping away tamely, the race was wide open for a big-priced winner and World Citizen proved to be good enough.
The 10/1 shot had won at 33/1 six runs back at Downpatrick when ridden by Jody McGarvey. The young claimer was on board Corbally the runner-up today, who he galvanised to within a short head at the line at 16/1.
Ryan Treacy did the steering on World Citizen and rallied her on the run-in to get back up. The young jockey who is attached to Oliver Brady’s stable was praised by winning trainer Desmond McDonogh who said: “That’s Ryan’s first ride for me and he gave her some ride. No doubt Oliver will be on to me!
“That was a great win. It’s been a good week for the Newell’s. They had a winner in Limerick trained by Mark Roper [Courtly Conduct].
“They are marvellous people and longstanding patrons.”
Sacre Malta was subsequently found to be lame post-race.
