Young Ted was driven clear inside the final furlong to run out an impressive winner of the concluding bumper at Thurles this afternoon.

Nina Carberry was pushing along on her mount to give chase to Eagle Roque turning for home but he came back on the bridle to challenge passing the two pole.

The Noel Meade-trained gelding hit the front over a furlong from home and powered away in the closing stages to record a 14-length victory.

The winner, who had finished runner-up on his debut at Gowran in January, proved easy to back, returning 9/2 having traded at 9/4 this morning.

"He ran very free the first day and she (Carberry) couldn't get him to relax. He's a nice horse and we always thought he was," said Meade.

"He has a bit of boot and won't run in a hurdle race until next season and we'll see about a winners' bumper."

Regarding the gelding's naming, he added "how he got the name was, I walked into the yearling sales as he was walking around the ring and said 'what's wrong with this fellow, he's making nothing - E14,000' as he was worth double that, being out of a half-sister to Minorettes Girl. 

"But anyway I bought him and Ted (Walsh junior) said we'd better go down and look at him. Ted said 'he's a bit small', so I was going to call him Small Ted or Little Ted but settled on Young Ted."

The Willie Mullins-trained newcomer, Redfield went to post the 6/4 favourite but faded before the straight to finish a tailed off ninth.
