Smart staying hurdler Streets Of Doyen (7/2) made a winning start over fences in the Guinness Open Gate Brewery Beginners Chase.
John McConnell ’s charge came through on the inside of the 2/1 favourite Bleu Berry after the last and soon went on.
He idled up the hill but just did enough to hold the late bid of Western Run (14/1) by a neck, with the favourite a further length and three quarters away in third.
The 7-year-old had a great spell of form last autumn when winning four on the spin over hurdles and acquitted himself well when raised in class at Cheletenham and Aintree earlier this year.
“The gap just presented itself and I thought why not go the shorter route,” said Torrens.
“I came across to the stands’ rail for a bit of a running rail. Halfway up the hill he spotted the crowd and he idled plenty.
“He wore cheekpieces over hurdles and I'd say it won't be too long before he gets them put on again.
“He's a classy horse, he went to Cheltenham and was third in the Albert Bartlett. He's been consistent all year and deserved to get his head in front.”
