When Cecil Corbett slipped through on the inner to head Stonehall Jack into the straight, the Kilbeggan Patrons Club Handicap Chase looked his to lose. There were to be more twists before Heist added to his course win from 27 days back.
As the aforementioned Cecil Corbett faded from the last, it rested between Down Under and Heist. The former looked like he might have prevailed, but the angle is tricky here and the Paddy Griffin-trained and Adam Short-ridden Heist gained the
day by a
short
head.
James Griffin (son and assistant trainer) said: "He's in the Kerry National and that's why he ran here. I still don't think he will get in, and if he doesn't make the cut he will go for a handicap chase at Cheltenham in October.
"This is really all about Adam (second winner and first in Ireland). He's been with us since May and is a very hard working lad. He's been telling us that the horse has been bouncing every time he's ridden him.
"Last year he was never right but he had a good winter and is in great form this year. He's a real fast ground summer horse."
