The TRM Nutrition-Supporting Stable Staff Apprentice Handicap saw Scott McCullagh ride his first winner since returning to ride in Ireland on the 17/2 chance Ramiro

The Born To Sea gelding travelled well tracking the leaders and led over a furlong from home. He kept on well to fend off the challenge of Drumquina (13/2) by a length. Trueba and the slow-starting Scherzando completed the placings with the 11/2 favourite Myrcella finishing down the field in 13th.

Ramiro had been placed twice earlier in the month, at Cork and Roscommon, for John Murphy and was making a winning start for new trainer Ian O’Connor, based in Glenbeigh, County Kerry.

The winning rider, who claims 5lbs, is a son of Niall McCullagh and had a successful spell in Britain last year when based with Mick Channon.

Afterwards McCullagh commented: “The change of scenery probably did the trick on him. Ian (O’Connor) hasn’t had him that long but was very confident beforehand.

“I kept it very straightforward, tracked the leaders and went for him inside the furlong pole.

“I’m delighted to get my first winner since coming back from England. I’ve been knocking on the door a couple of times lately.

“I’m riding out for Jessica Harrington during the week and go to Kevin Prendergast on Saturday. I’m available to ride work for anyone else after mid-day.

“Hopefully this will get the ball rolling again.”
