Saltonstall recorded his first win since 2020 when arriving late under jockey Adam Caffrey to land the TipperaryRaces.ie Handicap at Tipperary.
The Ado McGuinness-trained eight-year-old had been without a win since scoring at Dundalk almost two years ago. He had dropped down the handicap in the interim but showed more on his latest start at Listowel.
Adam Caffrey who looks a young jockey with a big future, sat well off the fast early pace before delivering the veteran with a well judged run over a furlong out.
It was an eighth career success for Saltonstall, who has been one of the stalwarts of the McGuinness yard in recent seasons.
Assistant Stephen Thorne said:- “He's been an unlucky horse all season but he's slipped down to a lovely mark.
“Obviously he's been competing in premier handicaps all season. He didn't have the rub of the green in Galway, he just got no luck in running.
“There have been a few races this year where he's had troubled passages because he's a hold up horse.
“They went good and quick today and Adam was super cool on him. We told him to fill him with confidence.
“The ground was beautiful for him today and it was his Derby, there's life in the old boy yet.
“Adam is very good value for 7lb and we're blessed to have two good apprentices in the yard in him and Cian MacRedmond.
“When they get to know these older horses they are serious value for their claims.
“I'm delighted for Dooley Thoroughbreds and our sponsors BT O'Sullivan as well. They are strong supporters of the stable. This horse started the whole thing going for them.”
