Gavin Ryan doubled up at Galway when Clear Quartz obliged in the concluding Caulfield Industrial Handicap over an extended mile.
Ryan held the box seat in second behind No Patience and the grey gelding was on good terms with himself as he closed in the final quarter of a mile.
He worked his way to the front straightening up and was ridden to go and win his race in the final furlong.
The 15/2 shot (from 10s) toughed it out well to see off a strong-finishing Turbine (16/1) by a length and a quarter. No Patience dropped to third at 20/1 but was nicley clear of Chilean (28/1).
Trainer Mark Fahey said: “That's magic. Gavin was super on him and I'm delighted for Jean (Bird, owner).
“He's a tough horse, a genuine horse and I'm just delighted to have my first winner in Galway. I can't believe it.
“He had to give away the penalty the last day to No Patience and turned it around today.”
Ryan was also successful on Coreman in race five.
