Philip Rothwell doubled up on the card at Cork this afternoon when Weihnachts ran out a game winner of the two-and-a-half mile handicap chase.
The JP McManus-owned gelding was driven along in fourth turning for home, by Simon Torrens, but stuck to his guns down the straight.
He gained a narrow lead over the last fence and stayed on well in the closing stages to post a length-and-three-quarters victory over the fast finishing Ballyadam Destiny
The 18/1 winner had been third in the same race 12 months ago.
"He won two chases and I suppose he crept up the ratings and struggled a bit. He loves the muck and Simon has a great understanding for him,” said Rothwell.
"It might be wrong to have favourites but I get a great kick out of getting a winner in those colours.
“J.P. and his family have been hugely supportive of me in the last few years - I only have one or two for them but they are very good to me and I really appreciate it."
Regarding plans, he added "muck and a chase, and if we find that we'll be alright."
McManus' racing manager Frank Berry confirmed jockey Mark Walsh to have injured ribs and will be out of action for "a few weeks".
Rothwell had also been on the mark earlier with Starzov in the rated novice hurdle.
