Aidan O’Brien saddled a 1-2 in the Frank Conroy Irish EBF Maiden at Leopardstown but the result was a surprise to most with Delano Roosevelt making a successful debut by touching off the odds-on Coat Of Arms
The 4/6 favourite looked set to score when a couple of lengths up inside the final furlong but was unable to hold the late surge of his well-bred stable-companion.
Wayne Lordan ’s mount, by Galileo out of the Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Again, came home well to just get up in the final strides. Warm The Voice also made a promising debut staying on a further length and a half away in third.
O’Brien said, “He’s a lovely big horse with a big engine, and galloped home well. He’s by Galileo out of a very good mare, and is still very green. He’s obviously a fair horse but where we go now is the next problem.
“There are no races for winners so you have to put them straight into stakes races. A horse like this wins a maiden and then they get pitched in too deep straight away. It would be great to have some of those novice races that they have in England which are a great idea.
“Ryan was happy with his horse. He just said when he got there he waited on them.”
Boylesports have introduced Delano Roosevelt at 20/1 for the 2018 Investec Derby.
