The Gordon Elliott trained Roi Du Mee won “his Gold Cup” at Punchestown today taking the Grade 3 Star 'Best For Racing Coverage' Steeplechase for the second consecutive year and completing a double on the day for owners Gigginstown House Stud.
Roi Du Mee, the second son of Lavirco to win at the venue today, made all under Paul Carberry and battled gamely from two out to hold the challenge of more established, and returning, chasers Magnanimity and Joncol on the run-in.
Afterwards Elliott stated “this was his Gold Cup! The plan was to 'make it' (the running) and we knew he had come on a lot from his run the last day.
“He won this race last year too and is a grand little horse who will pick up a bit of prizemoney along the way this season.
“He's not over-big but has a big heart and loves the soft ground - we'll pick and choose where we go with him this season and probably avoid a lot of the Grade 1 chases in favour of more Grade 2s and 3s.”
