Aidan O’Brien’s Camelot made an impressive debut in Leopardstown’s opening one mile maiden for two-year-olds.

The well-entered Montjeu juvenile sat at the rear of the five-runner field and cruised up a furlong out under Joseph O’Brien to canter away from Willie Supple on All Approved and win by two lengths.

Camelot, who cost 525,000 guineas as a yearling, was fully expected to do the job having been returned at the prohibitive odds of 1/3 favourite.

Winning jockey Joseph O’Brien said: “He couldn’t have done it much easier. He got a little bit tired so hopefully there’s plenty of improvement.

“He’s one of the nicer types. If they were all that easy the game would be simple.”

All Approved was runner-up at 10/1 while O’Brien's other two colts in the race – Fort Sam Houston and Canary Wharf – finished third and fourth respectively, while Jim Bolger’s filly Foinse the second favourite at 5/1, came home last.

Boylesports cut Camelot from 25/1 to 20/1 for next year’s Epsom Derby. The colt is entered in the Group 1 National Stakes in September at the Curragh this season.
