Morgan saddles nursery one-two
Joanna Morgan saddled a one-two in the nursery at Down Royal as Ancient Sands won from Equus Ferus
Pat Smullen was at work early in the straight on Ancient Sands but he started to motor inside the final furlong and grabbed front-runner Just One Fire.
He got home by three-parts of a length from stable-mate Equus Ferus, who also stayed on gamely in the closing stages.
"He's a nice big baby and will be a nice horse next year," said Morgan of the winner.
"I think there is a race for him at Fairyhouse (Sunday week). Smullen said not to run him more than once again. But I don't always listen to jockeys!"
"I fancied Ancient Sands more than the other lad. Rory (Cleary) rode him (Equus Ferus) the last day and said we wanted to drop him in because he was too keen. He was right."
