The Charles Byrnes trained Oscar Lantern was the well supported (7/1 - 5s) and slightly fortunate winner of the opening Toals Daily Racing Money Back Handicap Chase at Punchestown today, scoring under jockey Mark Enright.
Clear leader Swingbridge appeared the most likely winner on the approach to the second last fence but dramatically blundered away his chance at that obstacle leaving Une Lavandiere and Oscar Lantern to battle for the lead entering the home straight.
The pair were together jumping the final fence but Une Lavandiere crashed out, leaving Oscar Lantern in front. The winning son of Milan was then made work hard by eventual runner-up Routes Choice but stuck to his task well for a three parts of a length success.
Afterwards Byrnes said “he was consistent enough. His last two runs were quite consistent and he was at the right end of the handicap today in that ground; it paid off.
“He'd be idle enough but would pull out a small bit, he only has the one pace.”
“It's great to get the win out of him. We thought he would get one and once he's got one I suppose we'll try and get another one!”
