A 66/1 chance when running an honourable second at Fairyhouse three weeks back, Carrigeen Lotus built on that to win the Irish Stallion Farms EBF (Mares) INH Flat Race in convincing fashion at Cork.

It was a case of taking off one of the ‘sixes’ when it came to Carrigeen Lotus’ starting price on this occasion, but the 6/1 looked great value when Liz Lalor kicked from the front up the straight on the Jeremy mare.

Owned/trained and bred by Lalor’s mother and father, Dick and Anne, at Rathkenty, Lisronagh, the five-year-old was soon gone beyond recall.

Given her pedigree it was no surprise to see Carrigeen Lotus keep up the gallop. She came home eight and a half lengths to the good from favourite, The West Awaits

"She is a nice mare and just gallops. She came on some amount from the first run to the second run and I thought she had improved again. Today was a tougher test and there were a few alright mares in it so we thought we might be up against up it," said Liz Lalor.

"We are keen to hold on to her as she is the last of the Jeremys and has such a good pedigree but if somebody came up with money you couldn't refuse we'd sell.

"She is definitely capable of black-type and she is a nice mare who we like a lot."
