German-import Irish Poseidon made it second time lucky in this country when winning the Irishinjuredjockeys.com Handicap at Dundalk.
Third here last week, Matthew Smith’s runner, the strong 11/10 favourite, held off Laura Bullion (got in as a reserve) by half a length.
Sam Ewing did the steering and the front running performance prompted Smith to say: “I'd say he's versatile enough trip wise, he's just a little bit quirky. He missed the kick a little bit last week and came home strongly.
“I bought him out of Germany during the summer and he seems to be a nice horse, just a little bit quirky.
“There are a nice gang of lads from Navan (Spoonful Of Irish Sydnicate) that own him and I'm delighted for them. Sam, as usual, gave him a great ride.
“We bought him as a dual purpose horse. I'd imagine he won't be a winter ground horse so we'll tip away with him up here, give him a break at some stage, and have him back next year for hurdling.”
The Stewards interviewed J.M. Sheridan, rider, in relation to his failure to present himself to be weighed out on time for Manap (GB) in this race (M.P. Sheehy was allowed to substitute for him). Evidence was heard from the rider concerned who stated that he was involved in a minor traffic collision in Co. Kildare which caused him to be delayed for the first race. Having considered the evidence, the Stewards referred the matter to the CEO of the IHRB for further investigation.
R.P. Whelan, rider of Dumhach Thra trained by Ms Margaret Mullins, reported to the Clerk of the Scales that his mount lost his action behind and pulled up.
