Mtada Supreme proved very game as he battled back to secure victory in the Martinstown Opportunity Handicap Chase at Clonmel.
Ambrose McCurtin sent his mount into the lead at the fence away from the stands (five out) in the two-and-a-half mile contest but he looked under pressure turning for home. King Blue moved up smoothly to challenge two out and gained an advantage with a slightly better jump at the final fence.
Mtada Supreme knuckled down well, however, and got his lead back in the closing stages to record a neck victory.
Most of the 9/2 winner's recent form has been in cross country events but he had run well to chase home Whatareudoingtome at Gowran recently.
Trainer Peter Maher was leading up the winner but revealed that he'll go for the cross-country race on the Saturday at Punchestown.
Well backed 3/1 favourite Soaring High (8/1 this morning) blundered away his jockey at the first.
