The Melbourne 10 Sorry We Can't Be There This Year Handicap resulted in a notable success for dual-purpose jockey Mark Enright on Hell Left Loose (10/1).
The 5-year-old, who was registering his fourth career win, was always in the front rank but was ridden and headed by Teddy Boy over a furlong out. The Hellvelyn gelding responded well to his jockey’s urgings, though, and rallied bravely to get past Teddy Boy close home and score by a neck. Eglish (7/2) was another half a length away in third.
Winning trainer Denis Hogan rode his other runner in the race, Rocky Dreams (10/3 fav), who was outpaced at halfway before coming him well to finish fifth.
Enright explained the significance of his victory afterwards.
“That's a big one for me as I've rode a winner at every track in Ireland now.
“I was absolutely disgusted the other morning as I had no ride here. In fairness to Denis, I forced him into it now but he gave me a spin.
“I'm delighted, it's only a small thing but a big thing for me as it's something I wanted to do so it's important. Not everyone has done it.”
