Just out of maiden company Ellipsism (8/1) took the Devitts And Doheny & Nesbitt Handicap Hurdle at Kilbeggan for Joseph O’Brien and Hugh Morgan.
Morgan gave the So You Think gelding a nice ride down the inner, never too far from the pace.
Up to an extended three miles the four-year-old toughed it out well in the straight to beat Monsieur Bagot and Ocean Glandore by three and a half lengths and two lengths.
Ellipsism was bred by the O’Brien’s Whisperview Trading Ltd and was equipped with first-time cheek-pieces on this occasion.
“The step up in trip seemed to help him. He jumped and travelled great, and ground it out well," said Morgan.
“That’s my second winner for Joseph, and I ride out for him on Friday and Sunday when I’m not working for Henry (de Bromhead)."
The Stewards wished to interview J.B. Kane, rider of Monsieur Bagot, concerning his use of the whip during this race. J.B. Kane accepted that he had three previous breaches of R10(3) since the new whip Regulations came into effect. Having considered the riders acceptance of his disciplinary record in relation to R10(3), the Stewards pursuant to R10(6) referred the matter to the Referrals Committee for consideration
L. Quinlan, rider of Eimear trained by W. Ross, reported to the Clerk of Scales that his mount burst a blood vessel during this race.
The Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board Veterinary Officer examined Eimear, trained by W. Ross, at the request of the Stewards and reported the animal to have blood on the nose as a result of exercise induced pulmonary haemmohage.
