Doctors combine for Kiely's double
The first of the two bumpers on the card, the Boyle Mares Flat Race for Lady Riders went to the 5/1 shot Kilbarry Classic under Jennifer Pugh, recording a double on the card for trainer John Kiely.
Held up off the pace the winning daughter of Classic Cliché, made ground entering the straight, improved to lead inside the final furlong and soon went clear, winning by four and a half lengths at the line.
This was the easy to back (drifted from 7/2 out 5/1 on track), 4yo’s second run, having finished an unlucky fifth on her debut when not getting a clear run behind Ut Love at Tipperary in the early part of last month. Soto Star under Jane Mangan ran a career best to finish second at 40/1, while Latest Fashion was a further length and a half back in third at 16/1 in the hands of Kate Harrington.
Two Doctors combined for this win as winning owner, Mr Tadgh O’Sullivan is a Doctor at the Whitfield Clinic in Waterford City, while winning rider Jennifer Pugh is a GP in the Midlands.
Winning trainer John Kiely said afterwards: "She was a little bit unlucky at Tipperary as she met with a bit of traffic. That run brought her on a nice bit.
"Jennifer (Pugh) did what she was told and she is something to looks forward too."
