Basil's Boy served up a 20/1 surprise in the extended two mile five handicap hurdle at Downpatrick.

The five-year-old gelding got on terms with Musical Ava before the last but the complexion of the race changed when that rival fell there.

Denis O'Regan 's mount was strongly pressed by Global Racing on the run-in but pulled out more to win by a length and a quarter.

The runner-up was a 9/2 chance and he was 10 lengths in front of Balgowlah (9/1).

Trainer Liam Cusack said: "First winner at Downpatrick to be honest.

"This horse just took a bit of time to come to himself. He wasn't a great eater and he was a bit weak in himself.

"Even though he schooled well at home, he fell first-time out. His mind just wasn't in the right place.

"It took us a few runs and Denis (O'Regan) did a great job educating him. He ran a nice race in Listowel last week But missed the third last and lost his place. He finished off his race and I felt he came on from it.

"He was fourth in a bumper here and I had to try and get him into the money and get a win with him. It worked out well.

"It wasn't a great race but it is nice to see him coming forward. I had him in good nick and Denis gave him a lovely ride, it's great to get a winner."

The Stewards received a report from Mr. W. Fleming , Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board Clerk of the Scales, regarding the fact that S. Fox , rider of Pump Road , weighed in at 1.2 lbs overweight. Evidence was heard from the rider concerned, who stated that he had received a lot of kick back during this race having been towards the rear of the field throughout. Having considered the evidence, the Stewards were satisfied that S. Fox was in breach of Rule 231 and they therefore cautioned him on this occasion.

The Stewards interviewed C.P. McNamara, rider of Global Racing, concerning his use of the whip in the closing stages of this race. Evidence was heard from the rider concerned. Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were satisfied that C.P. McNamara was in breach of Regulation 10.3 (g), in that he used his whip with excessive frequency. Having considered his record in this regard, the Stewards suspended C.P. McNamara for four race days and reminded him of his future responsibilities.
