Basic Law came from last to first to win the five runner Irish Stallion Farms EBF Race over a mile in Gowran Park.

Colin Keane brought him into a challenging position on the stands' side and he took a narrow lead from Sherkali and National Guard inside the final furlong.

Sherkali kept battling, though, and it was only in the final strides that Basic Law could be called the winner by a head at 9/4. Sherkali went off 2/1 joint favourite.

“He's a gorgeous horse. He's a very relaxed, that we like, at home but he's educating us about himself on the track,” assistant trainer Shane Lyons said.

“He's improving with every run and he's after showing us a little bit of speed there that we didn't think he had.

“Colin said he was going to be handy but he was a little bit slow out of the stalls through greenness so he sat in and he showed a bit of turn of foot.

“He loves that little bit of juice and quick ground wouldn't be ideal for him. Ascot mightn't suit him for that reason.

“Seven furlongs to a mile is his ideal trip and we'll try and keep him progressing with every race.

“We'll see what the handicapper does. He'll get a mark after that and he'll tell us.

“He's improving mentally and he was still was green there today which was nice know that we have something up our sleeve. He's a quiet horse at home so he's leaving it for the track.”

The Stewards interviewed C.D. Hayes, rider of Sherkali, concerning his use of the whip in the latter stages of this race. Evidence was heard from the rider concerned. Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence the Stewards found the rider in breach of Reg.10.3.(g)(frequency) and having taken his record into account suspended him for one race day.
